This Easy Overlook Near the Mackinac Bridge Is Actually Worth the Stop

The first time I pulled in here, I honestly wasn’t even sure where to go.

It doesn’t really jump out at you like a big attraction, and if you’re focused on getting across the bridge, it’s easy to miss. It kinda feels like one of those spots you only stop at if you already know it’s there.

Once you get parked and start heading in, though, it comes together pretty quick.

The trail is simple and easy to follow. It’s well marked, and it doesn’t feel like you’re committing to some long hike. You’re just easing into the woods a bit, nothing too steep, nothing too rough. Even in the winter, it’s very doable.

There are some stairs along the way, probably around 30 or 40..ish of them. Enough to notice, but not enough to turn anyone around. It just breaks up the walk a little.

I had good cell service the whole time, and AllTrails helped at a couple spots just to stay on track, but the trail itself is straightforward.

The first viewpoint you come to has a set of binoculars, and right away you get a solid look at the Mackinac Bridge. It’s one of those moments where you kinda stop for a second and take it in. For how easy the walk was, it already feels like a good stop.

But if you keep going,(or go backwards) that’s where it really pays off.

After the stairs and a short stretch of trail, you come out to the second viewing platform. This one opens up more, and the angle of the bridge just hits different. It feels bigger, more spread out, and a lot more impressive than you expect from such a short walk.

That was the moment for me where it went from “pretty cool” to “okay, this is actually worth stopping for.”

It’s also one of those views that doesn’t translate well on camera. You can take pictures and videos, but it never really captures how it looks in person.

Time-wise, this is an easy stop. If you’re just walking through and checking it out, you could be in and out in about 30 minutes. If you take your time or mess around with pictures and video, you might stretch it closer to an hour, but you don’t need that long.

One thing to know, you do need a park pass to get in, so it’s not just a free pull-off.

As far as whether it’s worth it, it really depends on you.

If you like the Mackinac Bridge, this is a must stop. No question. It’s one of the easiest ways to get a really good view without doing anything difficult.

If you’re not really into the bridge or you’re just trying to make time, it might not be something you go out of your way for. But if you’re already passing through, it’s such a quick and easy stop that it’s hard not to recommend.

Simple, easy, and better than you’d expect.

How to Find It

The overlook is located just outside St. Ignace on the north side of the Mackinac Bridge.

If you’re heading north across the bridge, it’s a quick detour and easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. Watch for signs for the Mackinac Bridge Overlook or nearby park access areas.

There’s a small parking area, and from there the trail takes you in toward the viewpoints. It doesn’t feel far once you’re walking, but it’s not something you’ll just see from the road.
